When appropriate, works in conjunction with residents who express an interest in transitioning to the community.Fabricates and modifies custom orthotics which are critical in the prevention of secondary complications resulting from spasticity.Promotes access to the physical environment through set-up and training of Environmental Control Units for those with limitations in fine motor and dexterity.Works in conjunction with PT to promote independence and comfort in wheelchair mobility and positioning.Customizes orthotics for spasticity, contracture and pain management.Works with residents on maximizing independence in occupations, including self-care, environmental and leisure activities by offering adaptive techniques and equipment that promotes independence and access.Addresses both acute and chronic pain with modalities and positioning.Partners with Occupational Therapy to assess and train residents (who are deemed appropriate by the Interdisciplinary Team) in Community Mobility which includes safe navigation of city streets and the use of public transportation.Works in partnership with our staff Physiatrist and our team of Wheelchair Mechanics to ensure that every resident has an appropriate wheelchair that meets his or her functional needs.Offers comprehensive seating and positioning interventions to maximize independence in mobility, whether it is manual or powered technology.Focuses on interventions to maximize a person’s strength, flexibility, functional endurance and mobility including standing, transfers and ambulation when appropriate.These professionals value the importance of adaptive equipment and assistive technology in enhancing a person’s ability to participate in activities of daily living.
